Churches of Nafplio: Faith, History and Drama

No town in Greece has concentrated as many pivotal historical events inside its churches as Nafplio. At Saint George, Greece's first Governor was mourned and King Otto first entered. At Saint Spyridon, the bullet that killed Kapodistrias is still embedded in the entrance wall.

Panagia hides behind the Archaeological Museum, while the Catholic Church — known as "Fragoklisia" — was once a convent, then a mosque, and today holds Greece's oldest Philhellene monument. Saint Nicholas has watched over the harbour since 1713, freshly restored in 2025.

Outside town, Agia Moni holds 900 years of Byzantine history, while the Monastery of Karakala in Arachnaio lived through both the 1821 Revolution and the destruction of 1943.

Seven churches, seven different stories — from the birth of the Greek state to today.
