Nafplio Parking: Where to Park
Nafplio's Old Town was built centuries ago, long before cars existed — its lanes are narrow and largely off-limits to private vehicles, except for deliveries, emergencies, and municipal services. The good news is that parking around it isn't the headache you might expect, as long as you know where to go.
The main free parking area
The largest and most convenient free parking area sits along the waterfront near the harbor, northwest of the Old Town, around the old railway station (today home to a music school and park). It stretches along the promenade, reaching towards Filellinon Square. From there, the Old Town is roughly a 7-8 minute walk.
This is where locals park too, so even on busy days you'll usually find a spot — you might just need to circle once or twice.
Note that the port authority has installed railings a few meters back from the quay, so the free parking area is about two rows of cars deep along the waterfront — not the full width down to the water.
Heads up: the "Π" area opposite Bourtzi is NOT free parking
Many travel guides mistakenly list the area facing Bourtzi Fortress as extra free parking. In reality, locals call this spot the "Π" (after its Π-shape) and it's reserved for tour bus loading/unloading and organized tour departures, not private vehicle parking. If you see it empty, don't park there — it's generally not allowed.
Parking for permanent residents
Inside the Old Town, the few available parking spots are reserved exclusively for permanent residents. Under a decision of the Nafplio Municipal Council (no. 194/2024), eligible residents receive an annual parking permit sticker, one per primary residence, displayed on the inside of the windshield. The corresponding spots are marked in green with a white outline for easy identification. If you're a visitor, these spots aren't available to you, even if they look empty.
Practical tips
- Arrive early. Before 9:00 AM gives you the best chances, especially on weekends and in summer
- White lines = free, blue lines = paid. Always check the signage, as rules vary by location
- Spots inside the Old Town are for residents (see above) — don't attempt to park there
- Enforcement is strict. Park in a prohibited spot in town and you'll likely find a ticket; in some cases your plates may be removed and police called
- Security: free lots have no guards or cameras — don't leave valuables visible in your car
- June through September and weekends year-round see noticeably reduced availability — locals often park further out
