Hiking Arachnaio: The Best Trails Near Nafplio
Between the Argolic and Saronic gulfs rises Arachnaio (1,199m) — a natural fortress with steep limestone slopes, deep ravines, and panoramic views reaching the islands.
The Mountain of the Beacon Relay
Arachnaio isn't just a mountain with a nice view — it's part of one of ancient literature's most famous myths. According to tradition (and Aeschylus's "Agamemnon"), Arachnaio served as a beacon relay station — part of a chain of fire signals carrying news of Troy's fall all the way to Mycenae, so Clytemnestra would learn the news almost the same day. Pausanias also mentions that the ancient city of Lissa stood at the mountain's foothills.
What You'll See
The landscape changes dramatically depending on the side: the southern slope is almost entirely deforested, while the north still holds pine forests. The range has small plateaus with ancient oaks, the small Karabampas gorge (west of the ruined Talantiou monastery), and cave-chapels carved into rock.
The Route to Panagia Chrysospiliotissa
The most accessible and popular route: from the mountain's southeastern side, you climb 101 steps (stone, wood, and concrete) along a steep path about 5 kilometres from the paved road. The destination is a cave chapel at 700 metres elevation, entirely simple — just a few icons and lamps, with walls still blackened from fires once lit by shepherds.
⚠️ Caution: The route is demanding — rocky terrain, incomplete signage in places, continuous climbs. Not suitable for beginners without proper equipment.

Arachnaio has around 21-22 mapped hiking routes in total (via the topoguide app, "Epidaurus" section), including the summit route, the eastern ridge crossing (the most impressive, since the western ridge is visually affected by wind turbines), and the Arachnaio-Lygourio connection, part of the wider E34 trail linking eastern and western Argolida.
