Nemea Wine: A Guide to Agiorgitiko from Nafplio
Just 45 minutes from Nafplio, Nemea is one of Greece's most historic wine-producing regions — significant enough to have earned the nicknames "little Burgundy" and "Greek Tuscany."
The Myth Behind the Wine
Tradition links Nemea's wine to Hercules's first labour — his victory over the Nemean Lion. Folk legend says the wine's deep red colour symbolically comes from the lion's blood, which is why the region's wine is still called "the blood of Hercules." Homer also mentions the "Phliasian wine" drunk by Agamemnon — according to local tradition, from this very region.
Archaeological finds confirm that viticulture in Nemea has a history of at least 2,500 years.
Where Agiorgitiko Gets Its Name
Modern Nemea was formerly called Agios Georgios — which is exactly where the region's main grape variety, Agiorgitiko, gets its name. The town's renaming to "Nemea" happened in the early 20th century, for commercial reasons related to the wine's growing market reputation.
The Nemea PDO Zone
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) zone of Nemea was established in 1971, covering roughly 16-17 villages — mostly in Corinthia, with a small part extending into Argolida. Today around 38-42 wineries operate within the zone, from large facilities to small family estates.
Agiorgitiko is a "multi-dynamic" variety — depending on altitude and winemaking method, it can produce anything from light, fruity everyday wines to full-bodied wines aged for years in oak barrels.

Early September is ideal: the "Great Days of Nemea" event takes place, with wineries opening for free tastings, master classes, outdoor cooking, and concerts — right during harvest season.
