Nafplio Marina: The Project That Will Transform the Town by 2028
Nafplio's harbour is changing day by day. If you've visited the waterfront recently, you'll already have seen a construction site, a floating crane, and a coastal zone transforming before your eyes — it's the construction of the first marina in Nafplio's history.
What Exactly Is the Project
The Nafplio Marina is Greece's first municipal Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund. The contract was signed on April 8, 2023, with a total duration of 40 years — the first years for construction, the remaining 37 for operation and maintenance.
The contractor is TEKAL, through its subsidiary NAFPLIO MARINA M.A.E. — a company with substantial experience in port projects, having worked on Vouliagmeni Marina, the Port of Piraeus, the Port of Agios Konstantinos, and the expansion of Pier 6 at the Port of Thessaloniki.
Where It Will Be Located
The marina is being built 500 metres north of Nafplio's existing harbour. The granted sea zone covers approximately 71,200 sq.m, while the land zone covers approximately 43,125 sq.m. Boats will access the marina through the existing harbour channel — already deepened to serve cruise ships, meaning most of the required depths already exist.
What It Will Include
- 210 berths** for recreational boats
- 3,014 sq.m of building facilities — cafés, restaurants, shops, sports facilities
- 115 new parking spaces — addressing a chronic town problem on weekends, holidays, and summer
- Accessibility infrastructure for people with disabilities (€620,000 budget)
- Electric vehicle charging networks and renewable energy investments
The project's total cost is approximately **€23.4 million**.
Progress So Far
The works have already noticeably changed the harbour's appearance: the old fishermen's slipway has been removed, construction activity has reached right next to the Peloponnese Regional Authority building, and the land expansion is creating an entirely new coastal space.
The project hasn't proceeded without obstacles — a legal challenge temporarily halted the works, but it was rejected by the Council of State in March 2025, giving the green light to continue.
When It Will Be Completed
The goal is full completion within the **first half of 2028**. A 37-year operation and maintenance period will follow.
What It Means for Nafplio
The marina is expected to strengthen Nafplio's position as a sea tourism destination, attracting recreational boats that currently prefer other Peloponnese or Saronic Gulf destinations. The new land facilities and additional parking are also expected to boost the local economy beyond the maritime sector itself.
